Are Sedans Dead?

With SUVs ruling the roost, the iconic sedan body style has taken a backseat on popularity rankings

By MW Desk

In India’s ever-booming automotive landscape, SUVs have emerged as the clear winners, reigning over sales charts and capturing the aspirations of buyers across segments. Their commanding road presence, high ground clearance, and versatility for navigating the country’s pothole-ridden roads have relegated other body styles, like sedans and hatchbacks, to the peripheries of the Indian and global automotive market. While SUVs symbolise power, success, and prestige, sedans, once the epitome of elegance and sophistication, are now often seen as old-fashioned or uninspired, a fading relic of a bygone era.

Yet, there is something timeless about sedans. For most of us, the car we imagined as kids was inevitably a classic three-box saloon with a distinct bonnet, passenger compartment, and boot. This simple and iconic design has been etched into our collective consciousness for generations. In India, cars like the Hindustan Ambassador and Maruti Esteem brought this archetype to life, dominating roads and our imaginations alike. Even today, this design remains a symbol of simplicity and elegance, though its appeal is increasingly overshadowed by the bulkier stature of SUVs.

But for those who truly understand and appreciate the joy of driving, sedans make a compelling case for themselves. With a lower center of gravity, sedans offer sharper handling, better stability, and a more engaging driving experience. Models like the Skoda Octavia RS and BMW 3 Series continue to be favourites among Indian driving enthusiasts for their ability to hug corners and deliver spirited performance. SUVs, with their higher weight and center of gravity, might dominate the market, but they can’t replicate the sheer thrill that a sedan offers to those who appreciate the art of driving.

However, sedans are not without their shortcomings, especially in the Indian context. Their limited ground clearance makes them ill-suited for poorly maintained roads and oversized speed breakers, common across the country. While their interiors are spacious, they often feel restrictive compared to the upright seating and airy cabins of SUVs. The fixed trunk design, while adequate for everyday use, lacks the versatility to carry larger or irregularly shaped items, further diminishing their appeal for families or those with active lifestyles. In contrast, SUVs effortlessly meet these practical needs, making them the more logical choice for many Indian buyers. But is there a case to be made for a dying breed of cars that enjoy a storied legacy and have been synonymous with the word ‘car’ since forever?

Heritage, Motorsports, And Nostalgia

Sedans have enjoyed a storied legacy in motorsports and automotive history. Globally, models like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and Subaru Impreza WRX have carved their names into the annals of rally racing. Touring cars, based on sedan designs, have been instrumental in shaping motorsport culture. In India, the Honda City and Civic captured the imagination of a generation of enthusiasts, becoming synonymous with performance and excitement. Brands like BMW and Audi owe much of their reputations to the sporty sedans they have built over decades, which blend luxury with exhilarating driving dynamics. For many, sedans represent a golden age of driving, deeply tied to memories of ambition, aspiration, and adventure.

World Leaders Use Them

Despite the SUV’s rise in popularity, sedans remain the vehicle of choice for heads of state, royalty, and business leaders worldwide. The Mercedes- Maybach S600 Guard, with its blend of opulence and advanced security features, is a mainstay in the Indian Prime Minister’s motorcade. Globally, the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Lexus LS, Audi A8, and BMW 7 Series symbolise the ultimate in automotive craftsmanship and prestige. These sedans are meticulously engineered to offer unparalleled comfort and luxury, reinforcing their status as the definitive choice for those at the pinnacle of society.

Affordability

For the budget-conscious buyer, sedans still remain an attractive option. They offer luxury, comfort, and features at a fraction of the price of an equivalent SUV. Models like the Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz deliver exceptional value, often featuring the same technology and safety features as SUVs in their class. Moreover, sedans are typically more fuel-efficient due to their lower weight and better aerodynamics, making them a cost-effective choice for long-term ownership. Even in the premium segment, sedans like the Skoda Superb provide comparable, and in some cases even better, luxury and performance than SUVs at a significantly lower cost.
