By June, many Bangladeshi homes begin to feel like heat traps. Concrete walls absorb sunlight throughout the day and continue radiating warmth long after sunset. Ceiling fans spin tirelessly, electricity bills climb, and air conditioners become less of a luxury and more of a necessity. Yet long before cooling appliances became common, homes across Bengal relied on architectural wisdom, natural ventilation, and clever design choices to remain comfortable in a tropical climate.
Today, as temperatures continue to rise, some of those older strategies are proving surprisingly relevant again.

The battle begins outside the house
Many people focus on cooling the inside of a room while overlooking the source of the problem. In reality, a significant amount of indoor heat enters through roofs, walls, and windows.
In Bangladesh, roofs are often the biggest culprit. A concrete rooftop exposed to direct sunlight can become intensely hot by afternoon, transferring that heat into the rooms below.
One of the simplest solutions is rooftop gardening. Even a modest collection of potted plants can reduce surface temperatures by creating shade and slowing heat absorption. Larger rooftop gardens provide an insulating layer between the sun and the building.
White or reflective roof coatings can also make a noticeable difference. Lighter colours reflect more sunlight, reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the structure. In many urban homes, a simple coat of white paint on an exposed rooftop can lower indoor temperatures without any major renovation.
Rethinking the window
Windows are often responsible for bringing both light and unwanted heat indoors.
The direction matters. South- and west-facing windows receive the strongest sunlight during the hottest parts of the day. If these openings remain uncovered, rooms can quickly become uncomfortable.
Heavy blackout curtains may block sunlight, but they can also trap heat and reduce airflow. Instead, many architects recommend light-coloured cotton or linen curtains that diffuse sunlight while allowing some ventilation.
Traditional bamboo blinds, still found in many rural and semi-urban areas, remain remarkably effective. They block direct solar gain while permitting air movement. Their popularity may have declined in urban apartments, but their performance in hot climates remains difficult to ignore.

Let the air move
Many modern apartments are designed with aesthetics in mind rather than with airflow in mind. Yet ventilation remains one of the most effective cooling tools available.
Cross-ventilation occurs when air enters through one opening and exits through another. This continuous movement helps remove accumulated heat from a room.
In practical terms, keeping windows open on opposite sides of a home during cooler parts of the day can significantly improve comfort levels. Early mornings and evenings are particularly effective times to flush warm indoor air outside.
Interior layouts also matter. Large furniture placed directly in front of windows or balconies can block natural airflow. Sometimes improving ventilation is less about buying something new and more about rearranging what is already there.
The overlooked heat sources indoors
Not all heat comes from the sun.
Many homes unknowingly generate substantial amounts of heat internally. Traditional incandescent bulbs, older electronics, and cooking appliances all contribute to indoor temperatures.
Switching to LED lighting reduces both electricity consumption and heat output. Similarly, unplugging unused devices prevents them from generating unnecessary warmth.
The kitchen deserves special attention. Cooking during the hottest hours of the afternoon can raise temperatures throughout the house. Whenever possible, preparing meals earlier in the day or after sunset helps reduce this effect.
This is one reason induction and infrared cookers have gained attention in recent years. Unlike traditional gas burners, they release less residual heat into the surrounding environment.
The surprising role of plants
Plants do more than decorate a room.
Through a process called transpiration, they release moisture into the air, creating a mild cooling effect. While a few indoor plants will not dramatically reduce room temperatures, they can contribute to a more comfortable indoor environment.
Species such as areca palms, money plants, snake plants, and peace lilies adapt well to Bangladeshi homes and require relatively little maintenance.
Outdoor greenery offers even greater benefits. Trees planted near western walls can provide shade during the hottest hours of the day, reducing heat gain significantly.
This principle explains why older neighbourhoods with mature trees often feel noticeably cooler than newly developed concrete-heavy areas.
Learning from traditional Bengali homes
Many traditional homes in Bengal incorporated climate-responsive design long before sustainability became a buzzword.
High ceilings allowed hot air to rise above occupied spaces. Verandas created shaded transition zones between indoors and outdoors. Courtyards encouraged natural airflow and helped regulate temperatures.
While modern apartments cannot easily replicate these features, the underlying lesson remains valuable: design should work with the climate rather than against it.
Even small interventions inspired by these principles can make contemporary homes more comfortable.
Cooling habits matter too
Sometimes cooling a home is less about architecture and more about behaviour.
Keeping curtains closed during peak sunlight hours, opening windows strategically, using lighter bedding, and choosing breathable fabrics such as cotton can all improve thermal comfort.
Hydration also influences how heat is experienced. Traditional summer drinks such as green coconut water, lebu sharbat, and tok doi-based beverages remain practical responses to Bangladesh’s climate.
A cooler home without more electricity
There is no single solution to Bangladesh’s summer heat. Air conditioners will continue to play an important role, especially during extreme weather. Yet natural cooling strategies can reduce dependence on mechanical systems while improving comfort throughout the day.
Perhaps the most interesting lesson is that many solutions are not new at all. They come from practices that existed long before modern cooling technologies arrived.
In a country where heat is becoming an increasing challenge, looking backwards may be one of the smartest ways to move forward.
