Five places to visit near Dhaka
By Ayman Anika
Life in Dhaka rarely slows down. Between packed schedules, endless traffic, and constant notifications, even a short break can feel like a luxury. Fortunately, some of Bangladesh’s most rewarding destinations are only a few hours away. Whether you want to spend time in nature, explore history, or simply enjoy a quiet afternoon away from the city’s bustle, these places make excellent weekend getaways.

Panam City, Sonargaon
Just over an hour from Dhaka, Panam City offers a glimpse into Bengal’s rich commercial past. Once a thriving trading hub during the colonial era, the historic street is lined with elegant buildings that blend Mughal, European, and local architectural influences. Though many of the structures have aged over time, their decorative facades, arched windows, and balconies still tell stories of a prosperous era.
A visit to Panam City can easily be combined with the nearby Sonargaon Folk Art and Craft Museum, where visitors can explore traditional crafts, textiles, and folk heritage. The area is ideal for history enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone interested in Bangladesh’s cultural roots.

Moinot Ghat, Dohar
Often described as the place where Dhaka meets the sea, Moinot Ghat sits on the banks of the mighty Padma River. While there is no ocean here, the river is so wide that the opposite shore often disappears into the horizon, creating the illusion of a coastline.
Visitors come to enjoy the peaceful riverside atmosphere, boat rides, fresh local fish, and spectacular sunsets. The area has become increasingly popular among day trippers because it offers a refreshing change of scenery without requiring long-distance travel. Early mornings and late afternoons provide the best light for photography and the most comfortable weather for walking along the riverbank.

Nuhash Palli, Gazipur
Created by celebrated writer and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed, Nuhash Palli is much more than a picnic destination. Spread across lush greenery in Gazipur, it reflects the imagination and artistic vision of its creator.
The estate features peaceful lakes, sculptures, themed gardens, tree-lined pathways, and open spaces that invite visitors to slow down. Many of the locations familiar to fans of Humayun Ahmed’s films and television dramas can still be found throughout the property. Whether you are a literature lover or simply looking for a relaxing environment, Nuhash Palli offers a calm retreat less than two hours from Dhaka.

Baliati Zamindar Bari, Manikganj
One of Bangladesh’s finest surviving zamindar palaces, Baliati Zamindar Bari stands as a reminder of the country’s aristocratic past. The vast estate consists of several impressive mansions built by the influential Saha family during the nineteenth century.
Walking through the spacious courtyards and grand halls provides a fascinating look at the lifestyle of Bengal’s former landowners. The restored sections showcase intricate architectural details, while the surrounding grounds make for a pleasant afternoon stroll. Since Manikganj is relatively close to Dhaka, the palace can comfortably be explored in a single day.

Bhawal National Park, Gazipur
For those who simply want to reconnect with nature, Bhawal National Park remains one of the most accessible green spaces near the capital. Covering thousands of hectares, the park is known for its sal forests, shaded walking trails, picnic areas, and abundant birdlife.
Visitors can enjoy cycling, short hikes, family picnics, or quiet walks beneath towering trees. During the cooler months, the pleasant weather makes the experience even more enjoyable. Unlike more distant destinations, Bhawal National Park requires minimal planning, making it perfect for spontaneous weekend trips.
Making the Most of a Weekend Escape
A successful weekend trip does not always require extensive planning or a large budget. Leaving Dhaka early in the morning helps avoid traffic and gives visitors more time to explore. Carrying drinking water, light snacks, sunscreen, and comfortable footwear can make the journey more enjoyable, especially during warmer months.

Most importantly, respect the destinations you visit. Dispose of waste responsibly, avoid disturbing local communities, and help preserve the natural and historical sites that make these places special.
Sometimes, all it takes is a two-hour drive to replace the noise of the city with the sound of birds, flowing rivers, or rustling trees. These destinations prove that memorable experiences do not always require long holidays. Some of Bangladesh’s finest escapes are waiting just beyond Dhaka’s city limits.
