Caught in KATSEYE

Meet the hottest kpop girl band sensation

By Mahjabin Rahman

It started with a YouTube recommendation I almost skipped. Just another girl group, I thought.

But a few seconds in, something shifted. The precision, the charisma, the way each member seemed to own the stage while still moving as one, it was electric. That’s when I saw the name: KATSEYE. Fitting, really. They caught my eye before I even knew who they were.

KATSEYE is the result of an ambitious collaboration between HYBE and Geffen Records (a part of Universal Music Group). Their formation was documented through the 2023 reality competition series The Debut: Dream Academy – a survival-style show aimed at finding members for HYBE’s first global girl group based outside of Korea.

The series featured 20 contestants from all over the world, competing in missions that tested not just their vocals and dance, but also their ability to connect, lead, and adapt. Over 12 intense weeks, fans voted, judges weighed in, and one by one, the final six were chosen. And thus, KATSEYE was born.

Each member brings her own unique story, culture, and color to the group – a key part of HYBE’s vision to build a truly global act. Sophia Laforteza (Philippines), known simply as Sophia, is charismatic and camera-ready, exuding star power. She’s often seen as the “face” of the group. Jeong Yoon-chae (South Korea), or Yoonchae, is a fan favorite admired for her polished performance skills and sweet charisma. Lara Raj (USA), known as Lara, brings an edgy, effortlessly cool vibe – modern and almost alternative. Manon Bannerman (Switzerland), aka Manon, stands out with striking visuals and a poised, elegant stage presence. Daniela Avanzini (Brazil), known as Daniela, adds fiery energy and passionate spark to their performances. Megan Skiendiel (USA), or Megan, is quietly powerful, known for her emotive performances and strong vocals. Together, they form a diverse mix of cultures, languages, and personalities – but when they perform, it’s pure unity.

KATSEYE officially debuted in March 2024, and their sound is a vibrant blend of pop, R&B, and a touch of hip-hop. Their debut single, also named “Debut,” captured attention not only for its catchy production, but also for how confidently they carried themselves like veterans, not rookies.

Their style is bold, confident, and unapologetically global. Visually, they lean into futuristic aesthetics with a nod to high fashion, tech, and streetwear – the kind of concept that wouldn’t feel out of place on both a Coachella stage or a Seoul music show.

KATSEYE’s songs go beyond catchy, they’re a full-on celebration of empowerment and sisterhood, wrapped in slick production and fierce energy. From their confident debut anthem “Debut,” where they proudly claim their space as a united force, to the dreamy, dance-pop shimmer of “Touch,” which transforms heartbreak into strength, the group radiates self-assurance. Tracks like “My Way” and “I’m Pretty” dive into themes of self-love, resilience, and embracing your worth, while “Tonight I Might” is all about letting go and owning your choices without apology.

Even their soundtrack gems like “Flame” and “Time Lapse” are laced with that signature KATSEYE spark – bold, emotional, and unapologetically real. Whether they’re singing about independence, healing, or lifting each other up, KATSEYE makes one thing clear: they shine brightest when they shine together.

There’s always that one song that instantly hooks you and turns you into a fan – for me, that was “My Way.” The tone, vibe, rhythm, lyrics, and overall simplicity of the song made me confident about KATSEYE’s potential.

The first album of KATSEYE is called SIS which stands for “Soft is Strong” and that radiates their theme: self-confidence, empowerment and sisterhood. Press and fans picked up on the concept. Media coverage has been largely positive – Vogue declared, “KATSEYE’s members are out to change the look and sound of modern pop,” and People praised them as “feminine, powerful, and unique.”

Then comes“Gnarly” on April 30, 2025, which is KATSEYE’s way of kicking down the door and saying, “We’re not here to play it safe.” Ditching their earlier polished pop vibe, the girls dove headfirst into loud, gritty hyperpop – and it was glorious chaos. With lyrics playing off the slang “gnarly” (as in wild, awesome, slightly unhinged), the song hit like a jolt of adrenaline. Even Lara joked that it was a major left turn – but what a ride! The track exploded, landing KATSEYE their first-ever spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and making waves in the UK too. Then came the Ice Spice remix on June 6, turning the track into a trap-tinged club banger with extra fire. Streams soared, fans lost their minds, and KATSEYE showed the world they’re not just following trends – they’re setting them.

In a world where most girl groups are boxed into categories K-pop, Western pop, indie, glam, KATSEYE steps in like a wildcard. They’re trained like K-pop idols but marketed with Western sensibilities. They speak multiple languages, appeal across continents, and refuse to be pinned to one culture.

More than anything, they symbolize a shift in the globalization of the idol system. With members from all over the world and songs that blend genres and languages effortlessly, KATSEYE proves that versatility isn’t just welcome – it’s the future of pop culture.
